How do you pronounce it?
That’s certainly something you’d like to wrap your head around (at least at some point).
Yet, truth is, no one cares how you pronounce it as long as you can experience it day in and day out.

Keep it simple and don’t over complicate the process. If you don’t get it the first time, no big deal.

YES!! and without the shadow of a doubt.
Likewise, Hygge is more than just a list of things to do & NOT a decor.

Where does Hygge come from?
Denmark (but the word itself comes for Norway). At some point, in history, Norway and Denmark were one kingdom only.
For the records:
- the first mention of Hygge is circa 1840 (which means Hygge is everything but a fad trends)
- Denmark is ranking on the top 3 of the happiest countries in the world every single year!
- the tax level in Denmark is one of the highest in the world. Yet, the citizens ARE full of happiness.
—> Who doesn’t want to model what the happiest people in the world are doing to be happy, content, and joyful day in and day out? I swear I do (so does my Great Grand Mother in her journals)
Is this only a decor for Fall & Winter?
This is a common myth I MUST bust once and for all. Danish people don’t stop living 6 months of the year. They enjoy and practice Hygge ALL YEAR LONG.
As a result, they just adapt what they do. It’s easier to build a snowman in winter and it’s easier to hang out outside in the middle of Summer.
In other words, Hygge (cosiness-based lifestyle) works not only Fall & Winter but also in Spring and Summer.
Want a decor? Ask a professional to set up a stage… But, you won’t get better in a snap because you own a fireplace and tonnes of fairy lights.
To sum up, if beating anxiety or winter blues was that simple, everyone would be happy and you wouldn‘t need a medication to avoid anxiety.
(Under medication? NEVER EVER stop without a professional help. Asking for help should be your #1 priority. No shame nor guilt to seek for a better health, or a better mental clarity)

The fact is, Hygge happens in a Moroccan house, a contemporary penthouse, a cottage close to the sea, a tiny house, a small apartment that looks like a boudoir, or a fancy super modern house.

I LOVE Summer… I need light and long days outside, spending the time to read more and taking incredible pictures using the sun. I’m going to share a little secret with you: I am born in August and, as time passes by, I’m more and more appealed to the season’s cycle.
Summer has so many things to offer: fruits and veggies everywhere… more time outside, a joyful mood just thanks to the sun and our brain who loves light.
Ok, you get it. I’m summer addict. BUT how are we supposed to live Hygge every season when Hygge seems to be linked to Autumn and Winter? You know: chunky knittings, blankets, hot chocolate, sewing, embroidery, huge chimneys and crockpot with homemade soups.
Let’s see what the amazing Jo Kneale has in her bag…

Before I share with you more ideas about Summer activities, keep in mind that Hygge comes from Denmark & Danes are craving about light in any kind of form.
That’s why I’ve gathered suggestions that are focused on this idea. Bonus effect: as human, we all need light to function properly. Our brain is working faster, smarter, quicker. Our mood is better, naturally happier.. Say goodbye to mood swings (yeahhhh!!)

1/Open window early to smell the garden, to hear the birds, to look at flowers…
Sometimes it’s THAT simple: taking 5 minutes to slow down and look at the beauty of what’s around us. Even if you live in a city (like I do), there’s a place where you can get closer to the Nature. I’m flabbergasted each time I see bees around a bush of flowers.
What I love about Summer is sleeping with the windows opened, which means I’m waking up by the crows around my apartment. That’s the happiest way of waking up for me.
2/Wake up with the sun to drink your favourite coffee (the golden hour)
Ok… I’m going to be very very serious (yeah, I can be that serious. Really)
I am totally unable to say hello to someone if I don’t have caffeine running through my veins… I’m not grumpy or anything, I’m just out of my high heels.
You can use the same kind of moments to start your day with a smile on your face. It’s like warming up your mind, your creativity, your focus, your happiness.
By the way, are you more a coffee or a tea drinker? (because it’s working very well with tea)
3/ Look at the stars/ Learn astronomy
I’m awful at stars understanding… finding the constellations or where they are, what they mean.. I’d love to know more about (especially because Summer is the perfect season to start learning this skill).
You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on expensive tools, but take a look at your local facilities. You may have summer free activities around stars in your town, or your neighbour may be a Master at “reading” stars. Bring him a lemon glaze cake to thank him and ask him for help.
4/ A fire on the beach with friends or a fire near a lake
This is so relaxing. You’re hearing the sounds of the water, you’re surrounded by people you love and you’re spending an evening without electronic devices. You’re having time to reconnect with what matters: your self, your friends, your family.
Bring a ball, some tennis equipment, play with the wind… take pictures… The sky is the limit.
4/ Picnic near you in a park…
I wished I’d be able to do more regularly because I LOVE picnic. It’s cheaper than restaurants, it’s funnier, it’s custom… and it creates so many memories.
The menu doesn’t have to be fancy or very complicated but it has to be mouth watering. For me, it’s a gluten free club sandwich with home made chicken “mousse” (or some home made sushis with tuna).
If you add some fresh rooibos (no theine and no caffeine inside… so even kids can drink it) with lime slices and ice cubes.
For the dessert, home made a fruit salad with yummy, juicy fruits.
5/ Reading under the trees
Grab books from Jo (scroll up to know more about her book) or visit your local library to borrow books that feed your soul, mind, heart,… with positive things only.
There are so many horrible things out there and if you are anything like me, you’re attracting (and retaining) all the bad things around (without even realising clearly).
Take some time to be “healthily” selfish, to set boundaries that protect you and your sanity. You can’t stand up for your loved ones if you’re totally broke and tired.
6/ Taking pictures
Grab your phone or your trusted camera and walk in a park… Spend time in your garden and try to look at the world through the lens of the camera, you’ll discover tiny elements, cute scenes… that seem to be out of the time.
Save them on your camera and improve your skills while having fun.
7/ Drawing/ Painting
This one may take time. The learning curve is soooo long and if you’re not a natural artist (like me), let’s say it could be very disappointing.
But as soon as you accept that it’s not made to be a part of an exhibition, you’re on a good way to have fun
8/ Just Chilling
Uhmm… Do we need to really explain this one??
It’s time to wrap up!
Summer is a perfect time to change our mindset, to reset our habits, to let go what is no longer useful, to develop a closer relation with friends or family, to step back and spend more time alone.
You don’t have to fit the mould of what the society wants. You don’t have to accept the peer pressure around you to feel awesome, worthy or valuable. You are totally perfect the way YOU decide to BE.
